Mahakumbh Mela has been organized since ancient times. Its history is related to the mythology and religious beliefs of Hinduism.

History and Origin:

1. Mythology:

The beginning of Maha Kumbh Mela is mentioned in the legend of Samudra Manthan. This legend is found in the ancient texts of Hinduism, such as Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, and Mahabharata.

Gods and demons churned the ocean together to obtain Amrit (nectar of immortality).

When the Kalash (pot) of Amrit came out, there was a struggle between the gods and demons over it.

During this struggle, a few drops of Amrit fell on the earth at four places:

The first historical mention of the Maha Kumbh Mela is found in Harshacharita (7th century) written by Banbhatta. It describes the organization of the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj by King Harshvardhan.

The Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang has also mentioned the Kumbh Mela held in Prayagraj in the 7th century in his travelogue.

3. Development over time:

In ancient times, Maha Kumbh was the center of religious rituals.

In the medieval and modern times, it became a huge cultural and religious event, in which millions of devotees participate.

Maha Kumbh Mela 2025:

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will be held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh from January 13 to February 26, 2025. During this period, millions of devotees will bath at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers, which is considered significant in Hinduism for the deliverance from sins and attainment of salvation.

1. Paush Purnima: 13 January 2025 (Monday)

2. Makar Sankranti: 14 January 2025 (Tuesday)

3. Mauni Amavasya (Somvati): 29 January 2025 (Wednesday)

4. Basant Panchami: 3 February 2025 (Monday)

5. Maghi Purnima: 12 February 2025 (Wednesday)

6. Mahashivratri: 26 February 2025 (Wednesday)

Among these dates, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami and Mahashivratri are particularly known for the important “Amrit Snan”, in which sadhus and saints of various akhadas take a bath with a grand procession.

Administrative preparations:

The administration has made extensive preparations for the successful organization of Mahakumbh 2025. A temporary city has been set up in Prayagraj, which includes housing, roads, electricity, water, communication towers and 11 hospitals. Around 50,000 policemen have been deployed for security, and over 2,500 cameras have been installed for crowd management.

Travel and accommodation:

Special trains and buses have been arranged for the convenience of the pilgrims. Temporary accommodation, tent cities and other facilities will also be available.
