Makar Sankranti festival is dedicated to the Sun God, the Hindu god. The festival of Sankranti is celebrated when the Sun moves from Sagittarius to Capricorn or from Dakshinayana to Uttarayan.
Sankranti means the entry of the sun from one zodiac to another. According to Indian astrology, twelve zodiac signs are considered: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, usually on the 14th of January when the Sun from Sagittarius (Dakshinayan) Capricorn If there is Uttarayan after entering the zodiac, then Makar Sankranti is celebrated.
Most of the Hindu festivals are celebrated according to the position of the moon, but this festival is celebrated according to the position of the earth’s circle around the sun. Hence no fixed date can be declared as per Hindu Panchang.
Makar is considered to be the end of the winter season, after which long days begin. On this festival people worship the Sun God. As per tradition, devotees take a dip in the rivers especially Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. People do some charity after fasting according to their capacity.
Makar Sankranti is celebrated with different names in different parts of India, known as Sankranti in Karnataka, Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Maghi in Punjab and Haryana, Uttarayan in Gujarat and Rajasthan and Uttarayani in Uttarakhand.

Mythology related to Makar Sankranti:

1: Since Shani Dev is the lord of Capricorn, it is said that on this day Lord Surya himself visits his son Shani at his house. Hence this day is known as Makar Sankranti.
2: On the day of Makar Sankranti, Gangaji followed Bhagirath and met him after going through Kapil Muni’s ashram to the ocean. It is also said that Maharaj Bhagirath, who brought the Ganges to earth, performed tarpan for his ancestors on this day. After accepting his tarpan, on this day the Ganges got mixed in the ocean. That is why a fair is held in the Ganges Sagar on Makar Sankranti.
3: Bhishma Pitamah, the great warrior of Mahabharata, waited till the Sun reached Capricorn to leave his body.
4: On this day Lord Vishnu declared the end of the war by ending the Asuras and buried the heads of all the Asuras under the Mandar mountain. Thus this day is also considered as the day of end of evils and negativity.
5: When Mother Yashoda had fasted for the birth of Krishna, then the Sun God was making his debut in the Uttarayan period and that day was Makar Sankranti. It is believed that from that day the practice of Makar Sankranti fast started.
