Basant Panchami Story:
Maa Saraswati is considered to be the goddess of knowledge, art and speech. The holy festival of ‘Basant Panchami’ dedicated to him will be celebrated on Thursday, January 26 this year.
The Goddess Sarasvati is the goddess of intellect and learning. She has four hands which symbolize ego, intellect, alertness and the mind. She carries a lotus and scriptures in two of her hands and she plays music on theveena(an instrument similar to a sitar) with her other two hands. She rides on a white swan. Her white dress is a symbol for purity. Her swan signifies that people should have the ability to discern the good from the bad.
The goddess Sarasvati, sitting on a lotus, symbolizes her wisdom. She is also well-versed in the experience of truth.
According to the Panchang, the festival of ‘Basant Panchami’ is celebrated every year on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Magh month. The day of Basant Panchami is dedicated to Mother Saraswati. In such a situation, special worship is done to Mother Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge on this day. It is said that by worshiping ‘Maa Saraswati’ one gets knowledge and learning. That’s why everyone worships Mother Saraswati on this day.
There are six major seasons in India. Of these, the spring season is considered the most prominent. This is the reason why this season is also called the king of seasons. The weather is very pleasant in this season. In the spring, the crops are flourishing in the fields and the farmers are also very happy to see their good crops. This season is also much better in terms of health.
Many historical and mythological stories are also associated with its seven days of Vasant Panchami. It is believed that Goddess Saraswati was also born on this day, hence this day is also celebrated as Saraswati Puja.
Significance of Vasant Panchami Festival:
Many mythological stories are associated with Vasant Panchami. But the most prominent story related to it is related to Goddess Saraswati.
According toVasant Panchamistory, Lord Brahma was very happy with the creation of the whole world.when the universe was born, there was dullness, sadness all around in the atmosphere and there was no happiness in the world. Brahma ji was very sad to see such an atmosphere. After which he sprinkled water from his Kamandal, taking permission from Lord Vishnu.
From which Goddess Saraswati was born and after that she communicated speech and intelligence to all animals and birds by playing her veena. Due to which the sadness spread in the universe went away and joy and happiness spread all around. That’s why Goddess Saraswati is also given the status of Goddess of knowledge and wisdom and for this reason the day of Vasant Panchami is also celebrated as Saraswati Puja.
The angel blessed the people of the earth with voice. She also has the planet with music. Since then, that angel came to be known as Goddess Saraswati, Goddess of speech and knowledge, She is also known asVeena Vadini (harp player).It is believed that Goddess Saraswati providedvoice, intelligence, force and glory.
History of Vasant Panchami Festival:
1. First History:
The day of Vasant Panchami is associated with many major changes and stories in Indian history. According to history, in the second battle of Tarain, when Prithviraj Chauhan was taken prisoner by Mohammad Ghori and taken to Afghanistan. Then on the day of Vasant Panchami, Prithviraj Chauhan had killed Mohammad Ghori with his word piercing arrow.
2. Second History:
Apart from this, the second incident of the day of Vasant Panchami is related to the heroic reality of Lahore resident. In which a young boy Veer Hakikat sacrificed his life while protecting his religion on the day of Vasant Panchami.
3. Third History:
Raja Bhoj Pawar, the great king of India and the ruler of Ujjain, was also born on the day of Vasant Panchami. On this day a big feast was organized in his kingdom. In which his entire subjects were fed and this program started from Vasant Panchami and continued for the next 40 days.
4. Forth History:
Apart from this, Guru Ram Singh Kuka, the famous Guru and the founder of the Kuka sect, was also born on the day of Vasant Panchami. Many works were done by him for the betterment of the Indian society. Because of all these historical events, the day of Vasant Panchami is so popular among the people and it is celebrated with great pomp and show all over India for various reasons.
Basant Panchmi celebrated all over India
In North India, people generally observe a fast on this day. They wear yellow garments and cook yellow food items, loaded with turmeric and saffron. Deities of Mother Saraswati are decorated and people offer her prayers. People in Punjab celebrate by flying kites – they call it Dor and Guddi festival. In Central India, the newly wedded couples dress themselves in yellow and then visit a temple and offer first Vasant Panchami puja.
In Eastern lndia, specifically West Bengal, people observe “Hathe Khori” i.e. they ask their children to learn alphabets and write it down. In ancient times, the sanskar of Vidya aarambha was usually performed on this day. The student were admitted to school and they used to learn their first lesson from their teacher on this day.
